Sister Edith Prince (January 20, 1887 – June 13, 1982) was a pioneering Lutheran deaconess whose life exemplified dedication to faith and service.
Born in Basseterre, St. Kitts, British West Indies, she moved to St. Croix with her widowed mother. After her mother's death, Edith was placed in the Ebenezer Home for Girls in Frederiksted, where she was mentored by Sister Emma Francis, the first Lutheran deaconess of African descent in North America.
Inspired by her mentor, Edith pursued deaconess training at the Philadelphia Motherhouse of Deaconesses. In 1926, she became the second Lutheran deaconess of African descent in North America. Following her consecration, Sister Edith joined the staff of Transfiguration Lutheran Church in Harlem, New York, a congregation established to serve Black Lutherans, many of whom had migrated from the Virgin Islands.
After a brief tenure in Harlem, Sister Edith returned to Frederiksted, dedicating the majority of her career to serving at the Ebenezer Home for Girls, the same institution where she had been raised. Her commitment to nurturing and educating young girls left a lasting impact on the community.
Sister Edith Prince's life of service and faith continues to inspire, reflecting the profound impact one individual can have through dedication to community and spiritual commitment.
