VBS Training
Sunday, June 29 ⋅ 11:15am – 12:30pm
Things are getting exciting as we prepare for our Vacation Bible School - EGYPT: Joseph's Journey from Prison to Palace! Each volunteer and Junior Crew member is asked to attend an orientation prior to our week of VBS. This is important because we will cover safety protocols and procedures and it will allow our volunteers to have a better picture of how the days will flow. The two dates for orientation were outlined in the registration portal and this is just a reminder (if your preference has changed - no problem! Email nanc_fox@yahoo.com and let her know)!
Go, Go, Joseph!
Space is limited! Registration is open until we reach capacity.
Banner Blue is a 501(c)(3) focused on art and other innovative resources for ministry.
Churches often ask how to better engage their young people—but here’s the truth: youth and kids are already deeply engaged through creativity, technology, performance, building, and more. The key is recognizing and encouraging what they’re already passionate about—and helping them see how those gifts can be used in the church and the wider community.
That’s why Banner Blue and Brick Books are awarding $100 prepaid Mastercards to youth and children whose creative projects reflect imagination, heart, and a desire to make a difference. Submissions are due by Sunday, August 10, and will be reviewed by a panel of judges.
Youth and children in 12th grade or below are eligible for these prizes. This includes graduating seniors of the class of 2025. Submissions must be made by a parent or guardian on behalf of the child or youth. The Riveter Prize may be submitted on behalf of a group of children or youth. These prizes are intended for any children and youth of the ELCA. Children and youth who live on the autism spectrum or with another disability are highly encouraged to make a submission. Each example submission below was made by an autistic Lutheran.

The Metro D.C. Synod Welcomes Rev. Dr. Philip Hirsch as Bishop-Elect
The Metropolitan Washington, D.C. Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is pleased to announce the election of Rev. Dr. Philip Hirsch as its next bishop. Rev. Dr. Hirsch returns to the synod following years of local, national, and international leadership within the ELCA, bringing deep pastoral experience, a passion for justice, and a vision for a vibrant and welcoming church.
Rev. Dr. Hirsch previously served the Metro D.C. Synod as Director for Evangelical Mission for a decade, during which time he led strategic initiatives that supported congregational growth, encouraged cultural diversity, and raised more than $1 million to launch and expand ministries throughout the synod.
Currently, he serves as Executive Director, Christian Community and Leadership at the ELCA, helping guide the church’s work for the past six years. His pastoral ministry includes nearly 20 years of service as Pastor of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Fairfax, Virginia, and Christus Evangelical Lutheran Church and Epiphany Lutheran Church in Camden, New Jersey.
Rev. Dr. Hirsch received his Bachelor of Arts from Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, in 1986 and his Master of Divinity degree from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, Illinois, in 1990. He earned his Doctor of Ministry in homiletics focused on Violence Prevention Among Youth from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio, in 1997.
“Above all things, I believe my faith in Christ is a gift that is central to who I am, and it informs everything I hope to share and do,” said Rev. Dr. Hirsch.
Throughout his ministry, Rev. Dr. Hirsch has demonstrated a deep commitment to serving the marginalized and underserved. This work includes:
Coaching youth at the Fairfax Juvenile Detention Center
Serving on the board of the Inside Out Network, which supports returning citizens
Participating in the Reframing the Dialogue on Race initiative for the National Council of Churches
Presiding over Dooley House in Camden, New Jersey, which built and operated homes for infants and children with HIV/AIDS
Organizing with Camden Churches Organized for People to invest in housing, safety, and job creation in under-resourced communities
As bishop, Rev. Dr. Hirsch plans to focus on congregational renewal and mission, saying, “We will work together to bring great life and vitality to our congregations and members by prioritizing the church’s ability to engage with new people, young people, and more diverse communities. We will help our congregations become places where people more easily find belonging and safety. Together, we will work to create a movement in the Metro D.C. area that begins to bring hope to each other, to the world, and to the church as a whole.”
Rev. Dr. Hirsch will begin his term as bishop on Monday, September 1, and his installation will be on Sunday, November 9, at 3:00 PM at the National Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C.
The Metro D.C. Synod warmly welcomes Rev. Dr. Philip Hirsch as Bishop-Elect and looks forward to the faithful leadership and vision he will bring to our shared ministry. We are eager to begin nurturing vibrant, inclusive communities grounded in the bold and boundless gospel of Jesus Christ.

An Ordinary Hero: Conversation with Joan Trumpauer Mulholland
Sunday, June 22 | 3 – 5 PM (includes a reception)
GSLC worship space & online (accessibility features)
Public event – all are welcome - 💻 Register
What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8
In the 1960s, Joan Trumpauer Mulholland was a White college student from the South who put herself on the front lines of the Civil Rights struggle. She participated in the Freedom Rides, enrolled as the first White student at Tougaloo College, contributed to the Jackson sit-in movement, and was active in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC).
Join us for an impactful conversation with Joan and her son Loki Mulholland, an author and documentarian. They'll share how Joan's faith led her to accompany her Black friends and others in the struggle against racial injustice in our country and commit her life to this ongoing work.
Joan and Loki will also discuss racial justice in the current moment and the importance of our individual and community efforts, no matter how big or small, in the collective struggle for equality for all.
There will be time for some questions and answers at the end and a reception and book signing will follow at 4 PM.
Questions? Contact Lori Strauss.
